Greetings, As many of you are aware, WAR's 1.3 patch is rapidly approaching! Before we open up the Public Test Server and release the patch notes, we wanted to sit down with each career's community and give them a rough idea of what to expect from 1.3. Patch 1.3's major balance changes focus on the balancing of direct damage vs. area-of-effect abilities. All careers should expect to see AoE effectiveness reduced across the board. This reduction can come in a change to damage/healing, AP cost, or effect radius, and will vary from ability to ability. Tank careers are, by far, the least affected by the AoE /direct-damage changes in 1.3. This is because the vast majority of tank abilities are not AoE and do not have high base damage value. Because of the limited changes to tank abilities, we will be releasing the majority of their adjustments during the 1.3 PTS and not with the initial launch of the PTS server. Black Guards will see a number of AoE adjustments including, but not limited to, the following: - Many AoE abilities have had their effective radius reduced, returning their radius to pre-1.2.1 patch values.
- A number of conical-area-of-effect melee abilities have been adjusted to a new standard melee CAoE. Range has been reduced but the arc of effect has been greatly increased. This will allow the character to more easily lash out at nearby targets without granting the career excessive range.
Below is a list of changes that are currently pending for version 1.3, but will be updated to PTS after the initial launch of the test server. - Bonus damage from Strength will now have a much greater effect on abilities with high base damage, but a reduced effect on abilities with low base damage.
- A few abilities have had the power of their secondary effects increased, such as Crushing Anger and None Shall Pass.
- A number of AoE abilities have been reduced in effectiveness through reductions in damage, or increase in AP cost/cooldown.

Ugh. Well, this could potentially be the death of Malice spec, unless they buff Horrific Wound and Murderous Wrath significantly. That said, the radius change is standardizing it across all classes...since we had the lowest range compared to Lots of Choppin, Demolition, etc., we probably won't see much of a change in Monstrous Rending at all, unless they nerf the damage or the cooldown. That would admittedly be a devastating blow for an already subpar class. Adam, I hope you do a followup like you did with the Bright Wizard and others. You know I'm not a doomsayer, come on. Tell me there's hope for the class aside from being a damage sponge with no way to get people to attack us. Message Edited by raelimar on 05-14-2009 05:26 PM

Adam i know ive been giving you guys at mythic a hard time but us black guards are reallly really hurting here. especially after a couple interviews from gamesday. can you tell us if there is any hope for us and if so can you at least hint at what might be coming down the line for us?

In other threads you've mentioned "changes to bring classes more in line with their mirror". I think the Ironbreaker/Black Guard pairing needs those changes more than anybody. What gives?

I think at this point it is safe to say that the Blackguard is a dead end and the class is being ignored so it can slowly die of atrophy.

According to Nate we are in line with IB because we can gain hate faster solo....
...
...
I'll just leave to you guys rage about not beeing a solo game and the fact our skills costs 50% more hate than IB has in grudge cost and so on..i just dont have the strenght to do it anymore

This could potentially be big. Depending on what else gets changed. NSP giving hate as a secondary could mean a huge boost in hate. Its already at 10, and 15-20 would be amazing. Crushing Angers secondary effect is mehish at best but a solid increase at 90 hate could be amazing for tank specc'd BG's. Also remember secondary effects could include: Feeding on Weakness life leech Crush the Weak Crit reduction Force of Fury (doubtful) Brutal Smash (since Disorient has been lowered in effectiveness) Elite Training (Please change this)

Yay, my Loathing BG can get to 100 Hate faster.
Then still not be able to spend it because doing so would ruin my defense.

This is certainly disappointing after noise was made some time ago about how Black Guards should wait until 1.3 when they would get some real attention and balancing with our mirror, the Iron Breaker. It is safe to say we're hurting more than any other Tank and this Preview gives us very little to look forward to. Bringing down everyone else AE doesn't fix the significant issues with the Black Guard Career, especially since it appears that Monstrous Rending is going to get hurt which was one of the niche uses of the current Black Guard. Hopefully there are a lot of small adjustments to Abilities like Crushing Anger and None Shall Pass that add up to big improvements and just aren't being well reflected in this preview. In addition to long standing bug fixes that ensure our Abilities and Tactics actually work as intended.

I really hate that idea. Why not let us test it from the beginning? What if you introduce a horrible bug and it won't get noticed because you think it's just a "limited change". (Remember the Gnoblar.) I really don't see what possible benefit could come from that decision.

I think there will be a test PTS up for 1.2.2 (or whatever the patch is called) to test the next live event and the changes going into that patch.
