1.   Jeff Skalski 1.3 2 Producer's Letter - Discussion 10-15-2009 10:49 AM
Options    Options

Hey Everyone,

It’s been one week too long for me pulling together this letter.  The team has been pounding away at making sure our upcoming 1.3.2 patch is not only full of great features and improvements, but is set up to be one of our smoothest version deployments to live yet.  By now you should have had a chance to check out the 1.3.2 patch notes for our Public Test Server.  If not, check them out here.  I’ll still be here when you get back!

Read the full article on the WAR Herald!

Please remember to keep discussion civil, contructive and on topic.

Thanks!

First off, I'd like to say that posting a Producer's letter along with a new patch going live is a great way to enhance the feedback the community is receiving. I hope we'll be seeing this again with the next patch that goes live.

A lot of the changes previewed in the letter sound solid, though the devil is in the details.

One thing I noticed that was not really addressed is enhancements for the middle tiers. The emphasis in this patch is on the new user journey in T1 and T4 enhancements, and 1.3.3 sounds to be another T4 patch. Is anything going to be done to help out players in T2 and T3? On Phoenix Throne especially both zones are completely dead and there is a much higher instance of lowbie players heading to T4 even though they can't be bolstered simply because there is zero activity in their native tier. The apprentice system may help this somewhat, but it doesn't address the core issue of RvR being completely dead in their tiers. It makes it difficult to lock zones via domination points when it's often impossible to do much of anything about lower tier vps simply because no one is in the lower tier.

You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Avelorn, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Black Orc when death is on the line!

Please Please don't tell me this is the full 1.3.3 Producers Letters.  All the previous letters have been full on about the next upcomming patchs and this one is basically on the state of this patch 1.3.2.   Not trying to troll or anything they did give a few good things to look forward too!!!! BLOOM!!  I prey for HDR because HDR will make this game beat Aion graphics out of the water.

Lastly, I am not trying to troll but I hope the underdawg sysytem gives the players a way to push back againts the zerg in combat and not just a way to gain VP.  VP is nice but this is WARRRRR and we shouldn't have to run away to other zones because one side overpowers another by population.

I would like to post that 1.3.2 is a solid patch and I hope 1.3.3 brings more. I love the new systems, performance upgrades(A couple more of these and we have 1 hell of a game!, Going to miss the downgrade apprentice system, and the incremental balance changes!!!  Overall this patch is a huge boost for WAR but the one thing does concern me.  I know alot of people who play WAR for scenerios and IF citys lock scenerios then they all might end up leaving.

P.S.S.  I want to thank andy on PTS!  Every PTS event he does Q&A sessions and these sessions make the dev's transparent and show you they finally understand the community.   I prey they don't stop these sessions and make them more frequenet like one time when there is no PTS.

I think alot more people would be interested in these producer letters if they had a bit of information from multiple developer teams. Like UI team lead throws up a paragraph, C&C throws up a paragraph or two, RVR team throws up a paragraph or two etc.

As a previous poster stated, these used to showcase what was brewing for the future. Its kind of sad that we only got four points for 1.3.3.

Also, whats in the mix for 1.4 or 1.5? Are we going to be getting information on another Live Expansion Arc or is that way of patching out the door due to the time line constraints you guys put on yourself for the Land of the Dead live expansion arc? I would love to start seeing some new content in the game to keep my interest.

move hunter's vale to the proper pairing (DEvsHE) and I will have nothing bad to say about this letter.

Yay bugfixes!  maybe you guys will finally fix the z-axis issues that have been plaguing my class for months, and other classes since launch?

 Hi everyone,

 I just have one comment...

I believe that having all new players start in the same zone is a bad idea. Everquest did the same thing years ago when they were getting desperate. All the starting zones became barren, no one was ever in them and it pretty much removed them from the game altogether, theoretically. It will take away from some of the variety in the game. If you want the game to survive I suggest that you don't make changes that will make zones empty. This was probably the main reason I left Everquest years ago after playing it for 4 years.

 Thank you

You make two really good points that need to be emphasized.

(1)  The big problem with an underpopulated realm is NOT that they cannot lock zones.  It's that there's NO FIGHTING in ORvR.  As soon as a couple of underdogs show thier faces they get sacked by a gigantic pack of hungry dogs that have been bored to tears.  This is not fun for EITHER side whether or not you are locking zones. (see recent evenings on Iron Rock)

I know we don't have any details yet .. but it's troubling that the one thing that WAS mentioned had to do with VP when that is very far from the main issue.

(2)  Personally I like the new City sieges .. but about half my guild signs off when city sieges start .. they just don't care for them much and there's NOTHING else to do.  I think that's a mistake because if Sieges become a regular thing I can see alot of people bailing.

I understand that in theory everyone in the realm needs to band together and defend the city.  But you cannot ignore that in practice some people don't like the format and it's bad for the game to have players frequently bored/signing off because the city shuts off all alternatives.

Some people are like slinkies. They aren't really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Stop trolling already.  They are working on performance and graphical enhancements which are huge improvements overall.

 • Here is a video of HDR  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJL2silu_9w
 • Here is a video of Bloom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1Vc3WfzRo4
 • We know the forts are being rebuilt (Relic Raids?)
 • We know a underdawg system is going into place (Hopes it helps combat and not just VP)
 • Population balance (Hope they cap per side like Aion by 2-5%)
 • More small incremental balance changes and continued Crowed Control changes.
 • Rumored Expansion (lolz I hope its true)
 • Bugs/AI

Now these are all huge areas and I hope they get them done correctly.

Now that I stopped the troll I still want more information on 1.3.3 because this producer letter was poor.  The other producer letters were GREAT and gave hope about the upcomming expansion.  We need more information overall on 1.3.3 like the others gave IMO!

I have one question regarding the Hunters Vale addition to Tier1.

Will players from other tiers be able enter the dungeon and have it scale up to their level?

Some of those Hunter Weapons were great if you havent gotten into the heavier end game dungeons.

I was hoping we would see cross server scenarios.  I really think scenarios popping quickly at all times is the key for this game.

1.3.2 promises good things.  Look forward to it.

damned if you do, damned if you dont. Your premise is to build new crap on top of existing crap. My premise is to fix what exists and then build new crap. It's called a business decision. You just happen to not agree with it *shrugs*

Yay! ^-^

Can that be hot fixed in though as soon as it's ready? I don't think we need to wait a patch cycle for it.

it takes you a week to make this producer's letter? all you had to do was cut and paste the patchnotes. the first half of you letter was basically saying read the patchnotes, you wont go into details about the patchnotes and yet you still explained what the main features of the patchnotes are. the last part of your "takes a week to make letter" is a rehash of the previous  patchnote/producer letter regarding the underdog system. anybody could have made that same letter with using the patchnotes and putting a little "spin" to it.

so im asking this, so whats beyond? anything new coming up? giving us access to hunter's vale again? lol. dam event was the worse. it killed rvr. my guildies and i were waiting for that dam week to end so peeps will start fighting instead of trying to chase the mob and turn into pigs.

nothing new, nothing to get me excited about this game.

I hope 1.3.3 will be better than 1.3.2 in terms of C&C. I'm still stunned that the devs ignored almost all the feedback on the 1.3.2 C&C (like giving IBs an outgoing heal debuff for no reason whatsoever), but then again I'm not surpised since Order is obviously their favored side.

Here's to hoping that you'll actually have a vision for each class and also be able to communicate that vision (for once)...
Graphical enhancements (Bloom, improved weapon trails, heat shimmer, etc…).
So you've finally supposedly fixed a lot of the graphics performance issue with this latest patch, and now you're going to add even more useless graphic fluff?! That sounds like a wise idea...

No actually I think Fozee posted something on the PTS boards about some stuff from the expansion accidentally making it into the PTS files.  It was quickly locked and said the issue was being resolved.

There was some people delving the data and found info on vampires and a few new zones.  Slyvania?  Not sure there are a couple of threads about it.  Would  be nice if anyone that hasn't updated the PTS after the first event could provide some data...because it was wiped out for the second event :smileysad:

Hunter's Vale should stay in HEvsDE. It's a great idea to make it a tier 1 dungeon, but with everyone starting in CvsE there is little reason to go to either of the other RvR zones in the tier than to get influence and some gear. Better idea would be to put better dungeons in those zones to give people a bigger reason to go there. Otherwise, they will dry up even more than they are now as all the RvR will be in CvsE.
